• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Mike -- 100 years old. Kept in print by the school curriculum long after it has lost any popular appeal. : I found this book through a slightly unusual route. I was reading "Fire Touched" an urban fantasy book and there was a description of the books on the desk of the Marrok, leader of the North American werewolves. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anthony Mitchell -- Anderson's Grotesques Grip Me : I have never read anything quite like this. Anderson's grotesques are at times sad, at times crazy and always interesting. The tale of George Willard coming of age is one that really gripped me since there were so many other side stories and the other characters were well fleshed out. I feel like I know many of those Winesburg residents as I read it now decades after it was written. Anderson's prose is nice and clean and reads well on a modern level. This collection is fascinating and while at times I felt a little disturbed by some of the stories, I got into them all and couldn't put it down. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2016 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Poesis -- The Voice of the Midwest : "Winesburg, Ohio" used to be considered one of the most significant novels in America, a dead lock on the reading lists of most universities. I'm not sure that it's even read anymore. The Midwest of Anderson's time was knee-deep in grotesques. Today they still exist. They meet at Walmart 24/7. Sherwood Anderson was a strange man, who led a strange, not always happy life. He befriended a then young Hemingway, helping him on his way to a successful career. Hemingway, in return, made fun of Anderson, writing a parody of his style called "The Torrents of Spring". The oddest part of this, as I see it, is that Torrents remains the purest example of the famous Hemingway style--which indicates that Hemingway created his "style" by cannibalizing Sherwood Anderson. When you read Winesburg, you will see noticeable elements of Hemingway's "voice". It's the voice of Sherwood Anderson. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2014 )

• 2.0 out of 5 stars from DB361 -- not a timeless classic : I grew up about 20 miles from the real Winesburg. I wanted to read about how it was back then. The answer: boring. nobody changes. Nobody much expresses their feelings. Nothing much happens. It is all TOO realistic to how I knew Ohio in the 50s. I found it a labor to get through it. I know that there are challenges to getting classic books onto Kindle but there really no excuse for Amazon to take money for something not fit for purpose. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ralph Hill -- Recollections of yesteryear : I first read this book as a Penguin in the 1940's and thoroughly enjoyed it: a tale about early Small Town America. It is a series of tales by a young reporter, looking behind the personalities of the small population. When I searched for a reprint I had remembered the name incorrectly as 'Williamsburg, Ohio' and had librarians in Ohio hunting for a non existent book. Then I remembered the author and the rest was simple: Sherwood Anderson! On Kindle, for a few pence I was able to re-read those magical pages - not at all as I had recalled but even more entrancing. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Geofbob -- If you don't know it - do read it! : Sherwood Anderson's "Winesburg, Ohio" needs no recommendation from me - since the publication in 1919 of these interlinked short stories, set in a fictional US Mid-West small town, they have been recognised as original & compelling, with a cast of characters sometimes categorised as grotesque but perhaps more generously described as eccentric & seeking fulfilment. Anderson himself never quite achieved the same success with his subsequent novels; but he was hugely influential on other US writers, including Faulkner.
